The
FGBMF Malaysia has been the birthplace of many Christian leaders. Some of
the former FGBMF brothers are now serving as pastors, elders, deacons and
in various leadership positions in churches and other ministries. One such
person is Bro. Yang Kok Weng who is now serving with Full Gospel Assembly,
USJ as an active church working committee member. The FLAME
interviewed Bro. Kok Weng recently
Q. Bro Kok Weng, what
led you to the FGBMF and how were you involved in it the early days?
A: I was baptized in the
Holy Spirit in the eighties. My great thirst for God and His Presence that
followed thereafter were instrumental in bringing me to attend a certain
prayer meeting held at Menara Maybank in Kuala Lumpur. I did not even know
that it was a FGBMF prayer meeting. I went because I just wanted to pray.
After the prayer meeting I was invited by a few gentlemen to join them in
the cafeteria for lunch. The gentleman seated on my left was the late Dr
Abraham Peter Tong and the other gentleman seated on my right was Bro Ang
Chui Lai. It must be more than a coincidence because though I had heard
much about how God had used both His choiced servants to do much of His
work and ministry of refreshing and renewal in the midst of His people in
the Klang Valley and other parts of the country, up till then I had not
actually met either of them. I took it as a sign or leading from the Lord
as both of them subsequently became my spiritual mentor and beloved elder
in the FGBMF and FGA KL respectively.
Q. Can you compare the
spiritual climate then and now?
A: By reason that most of the present and
past leaders with the FGBMF during its pioneering days, I feel rather
inadequate and not well placed to express my views relating to the past
and present spiritual climate of the FGBMF.
Q. Would you say you have
attained utmost satisfaction when filled with the Holy Spirit?
A: One of
the most obvious benefits of being baptized and filled with the Holy
Spirit is the heightened sense or awareness of the Presence and guidance
of the Holy Spirit. I recalled receiving a phone call from a hawker
selling ‘tau foo fah’ along Jalan Sultan. The hawker and his wife were
supposed to come to one of the Chinese banquet organized by the Jalan
Sultan Chapter. To my disappointment both of them could not come and they
had asked me to go to their stall so that they could return the banquet
tickets to me. While at the stall to pick up the two banquet tickets from
the hawker, the Holy Spirit prompted me to offer the two banquet tickets
to two elderly Chinese gentlemen who were also at the hawker’s stall. I
reasoned with the Lord and I said: “God, you can’t be serious. These
two gentlemen are complete strangers to me.” God replied: "Just do
as I say, son.” I then turned to the two elderly gentlemen and said: “Ah
Pak (means ‘uncle’ in Cantonese), would you like to come for this
Chinese dinner banquet? These 2 tickets are free. They have already been
paid for.” Both of them replied: “Why not, otherwise it would be so
wasteful.” Both of them came for the Chinese banquet and heard the
gospel message given by Pastor Michael Leow. When the altar call was
given, both of them responded and gave their lives to our Lord Jesus.
Praise be to God!
Q. You certainly have
fond memories of FGBMF Malaysia. Would you kindly share them with us?
A: I hold fond memories of
great ties of friendship and brotherly love and care which I have fostered
with many brethren via the FGBMF ministry. Dr Michael Yong, Bro Michael
Cheng, Bro Goh Yong Chai, Bro Daniel Ebenesan, Bro Stephen Ong, Bro Sim
York Soo, Bro Dr Stephen Goh, Bro Tom Chan, Bro Sandy Yap, Bro Sunny Wee,
Bro Robert Chelliah, Bro Thomas Samuel and Bro Ravi Paul are just some of
the many brothers who have inspired and encouraged me much. It has been a
real privilege, honour and fun going for the many “fishing banquet”
trips held over the years together with many of the said brothers.
Q. What are your views
on FGBMF’s progress over the recent years?
A: I do feel excited over
what God will do through the FGBMF in the near future. This is the Joshua
Generation. As we wait upon the Lord in prayer for a fresh breath and new
wind of the Holy Spirit and as we set ourselves apart in consecration
towards the vision first laid down by our founder, Demos Shakarian, I
sincerely believe that God will begin to do a new and wondrous thing in
our midst.
Q. What is it that you
miss most on leaving FGBMF?
A: I miss praying together
with the brethren. Apart from the weekly chapter meetings, we used to set
apart one day a week for prayer in the clinic or office of one of the
brothers during lunch break.
Q. Lastly, what would be
your passing words to the current FGBMF members?
A: Wishing you God’s
abundant blessings for all your spiritual endeavors to be carried out
through many of your chapters’ programme and activities always
remembering however “to pray as though everything depended on God, and
work as though everything depended on us” (William Carey). |
